Artist statement
Every moment in time is taken for granted until it is presented in a different way with emotion. Moments are uniquely made within like with the time being captured through photos or pieces of art such as paintings. Through paintings, I try to capture a single moment in time with the emotion and feeling that is behind the moment. I have chosen a moment that stands out compared to others, that are personal and that I hold dear. For instance, my family and my extracurricular activities are the focus of most of my paintings. By having my inspiration for my pieces be personal and dear, it allows me to portray feelings and emotion easier within the paintings based on my own experiences. My brother has been my model for some of the pieces I’ve done. In each piece, he is depicted within his natural habitat since he was three… fighting. My brother was shown in finer detail while everything surrounding him was dulled and unimportant. My other pieces show more of my character ranging from a little kid to current adventures taken. Within each one, the subject, either myself or someone I hold dear, is in finer detail, almost as if they can be touched while everything around them falls to a great distance due to depth and active space of the painting.
The paintings are realistic with a touch of imagination, giving the feel of the person within the work or the person that the viewer has become by looking upon the scene. The imagination is dream-like, like surrealistic works, a combination of realism with a trace of fabrication on the scene.
The moments aren’t selected out of thin air but chosen based on the memory that I envision with it, the presence of those that I care for. So far, the paintings are concerning experiences that have been a part of my life affecting it for the better. Once the subject is chosen, the composition is altered to allow the eye to keep circling around the canvas. The color and lighting are the last part, depicting the connection between everything on the canvas. Each color is throughout the canvas, brought together through complimentary colors and secondary colors to change the hue and tone of the colors.
The background has enough color and realism but blurred to show the subject of the painting, the figures and/or nature. The important subjects are brought out in realism to emphasize the importance and feeling towards the figures.
